Ridgway Angus Seats Soup Plate c.1820

A pearlware dinner plate transfer printed in blue with a view from Angus Seats Series by Ridgway. Most of the views in the series come from William Angus's 'The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry' 1787. Although the vignettes in the border and the sailing boat in the main view come from Angus the main building is as yet unidentified. The plate dates from c.1820.

The plate is 9.6 inches (24cm) in diameter over the points and weighs 470g.

The plate has distorted in the firing, mainly to the rim, although there is a very small amount of distortion in the base. There is a 0.2 inch chip to the rim, entirely to the reverse and a pinhead sized chip to the back of one of the points. There are a few specs of debris in the glaze on the face. There is crazing to parts of the blue glaze, mainly where it has pooled under the rim, and a very few minor utensil marks.
